How to Clean a Mattress with Natural Products

Washing the sheets and mattress pad is easy, but what about the mattress itself? Although it does not need to be cleaned too often, the use that your bed has requires you to clean your mattress at least twice in a year. We have already told you how to clean a mattress, and how to remove urine stains from a mattress. But instead of cleaning your mattress with chemical-based products, here are a few tips from OneHowTo on how to clean a mattress with natural products.

Clean a Mattress With Baking Soda

For this mattress cleaning technique, you will need 16 ounces (approx. 500 grams) box of baking soda, some essential oil of your choice, and a vacuum cleaner. Add 10-20 drops of the essential of your choice, and mix it in the box of baking soda. The essential oil, whether it is chamomile, lavender or sandalwood, should be a soothing scent. Close the box, and shake it well. Sprinkle this baking soda on your mattress, and rub into it properly. Leave for an hour, and then vacuum. Make sure that all the baking soda is removed from the mattress. This will not only freshen your mattress, but will also lift any dirt and residue, and wick away moisture.

Clean a Mattress With Salt and Lemon Juice

Make a paste of salt and lemon juice, and apply it on the stain to be removed. The quantity that you take depends on the size of the stain. Leave it for an hour, and wipe off with a clean towel. Most light stains will be removed with this method.

Clean a Mattress With Vinegar

Take one tsp of water, 1 tbsp vinegar, 1 tsp laundry detergent or dishwasher detergent in a mixing bowl, and mix well. Blot or sponge this solution into your mattress while pressing down hard. Once done, wipe off the mattress with water. Don’t pour, just blot dry, and allow drying. After that, your mattress will become odor-free and clean. You can repeat the process to ensure complete cleaning.

Clean a Mattress With Household Ammonia

Ok, so it's not technically a natural way to clean your mattress, but if you have a really stinky mattress to deal with then household ammonia can be highly effective. Take some unscented, undiluted household ammonia, and blot over the stain with a rag. There is no need to drench the mattress. Wipe clean the area, and let it dry. This will leave the mattress clean and fresh.
