How to Clean the Freezer

The freezer is a place where we store food for a very long time. Therefore, it is easy to forget what you've stored inside and these foods can leak or leave food debris in the drawers. It is important to clean the freezer, to ensure that the space in which we store our food is in the best state possible. You don't need to clean it every week but it does need some maintainance from time to time. If you're thinking about cleaning your freezer, but do not know where to start or how you could do it more simply, we explain on OneHowTo how to clean your freezer step by step.

Steps to follow:
1

The first step is to clean the freezer and remove all the food, switch it off and let the unit thaw out, a sensitive point that should be done very carefully to avoid damaging this part of our fridge.

Avoid using ice picks and other sharp devices to remove the ice, or you could end up damaging your freezer.

2

Once the freezer is completely free of ice and frost, remove the shelves and drawers and wash them in the dishwasher. It is best to use washing up liquid and warm water.

3

For those shelves or drawers with accumulated liquid waste, it is important to leave them submerged in a bowl of warm soapy water to clean them properly later on.

4

Then prepare a mixture with two or three tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate (depending on the size of your freezer) and a little water. Baking soda is excellent to clean and eliminate odours that can stay in your freezer because of the food.

Dip a damp cloth in the mixture and begin cleaning the freezer. Remove residue with water and wipe the unit down until the freezer is completely clean.

5

Wipe down the freezer door and door seal as well. You can use a toothbrush so you can reach the more difficult parts.

6

Before putting the drawers and the shelves back, dry the inside thoroughly.

7

After cleaning, place the shelves and / or drawers in your freezer. It is advisable to wait at least 20 minutes before putting your food back into the freezer.

8

When you put the food back in the freezer organize it in different shelves. You can put all fish in one shelf, meat in another... Put the foods you're more likely to eat first at the top of the drawers so it'll be easier to find it and it won't go to waste.

Once you have everything organized and back in the freezer, don't forget to turn it on again!
