How to Decorate your Living Room with Plants

Apparently, indoor air quality may be worse that the air we breathe outside. Fumes from indoor appliances, perfumes and air diffusers are contributing to creating highly toxic homes. One of the reasons you should decorate with plants is that they may help to freshen up the air and absorb the chemicals by bringing in more needed oxygen. Another reason to have plants in the living room is because they bring a beautiful decorative element adding very much needed nature, texture and sophistication to a simple space.

In this OneHowTo article we explain how to decorate your living room with plants.

Fill in the corners

After you have placed the couch and added the sofa tables plus the consoles, you may be left with a small open space that is calling for something green and fresh. Corners are perfect for adding a tall, vivacious plant that can add some character to your living room. You also don’t want to overpower the room so if you choose a large plant, just fill up one of the corners and leave the other corners empty.

Table centerpieces

The best way to incorporate plants into a room is by styling them together to make a colorful and eye catching table centerpiece, and flowers are one of the best to do so. For instance, some yellow tulips over a white wooden table will add a natural vibe accentuating the simplicity of the space and will lighten it up inducing calmness. You may also use different types of flowers while still following the tones you choose for your room.

Plant collections

Plants can have their dedicated space in a room. As opposed to setting them up dispersed around the room, you can purposefully set aside a small area preferably by the window, to place a few of your favorite plants. A great tip is to place some glass or wooden panels as bases so that they stand at different levels creating volume and density. Combine different plant varieties, shapes and sizes to create your own plant art piece or indoor garden.

In between books and shelves

A big mistake many people make when decorating is filling up shelves with books and other bulky items that makes it all too crowded. When you stuff your big shelves with all sort of heavy objects it also creates heaviness in the room and it tires the eyes. By adding some natural decorative elements and small plant vases you are not only adding some color; but giving relief to your eyes by preventing overwhelm. This is a great opportunity to get your hand on some succulents and create your own terrarium.

Room divider

If your living room is also your dining room you can use plants to make a plant room divider. One of the ways to suggest this separation is by creating a fake wall using wide open panels and placing some plants on top. The plants will fill up the open space by obstructing the vision but not in its entirety. Some ideal plants to use for this idea are honeysuckle or clematis also referred to as climber plants. These are said to grow wide spreading across a large surface and creating natural walls.
