But vomit on your carpet is the worst to clean out. Not only it is hard to clean, rather even after a good wash the nasty smell lingers on for days. If you have already cleaned the vomit from the carpet, the humble baking powder can be an effective ingredient to fight vomit smell.
At first, clean the vomit and remove all solid residues from the carpet that can be removed manually as mentioned in the article above. Then take some baking soda in a dish. Add few drops of water and mix it. Keep adding water till the mixture forms into toothpaste-like consistency. For better cleaning you can add a drop or two of peroxide or any dish detergent. You can also add two drops of tea tree oil so you also get a fresh smell apart of getting rid of the vomit smell.
Note: Peroxide can stain the carpet. So, be careful while using it. Try it on a piece of carpet that is not usually visible.
Then using a spatula, apply a thin layer of the mixture over the entire carpet stain. Do not pour excessive mixture over the stain. Just a thin even layer similar to icing on a cake is enough.
After applying the paste let it dry for a bit. As it starts to dry, take an old toothbrush or any other brush and brush over the mixture. Make sure that you have brush the dried mixture over the whole stain. Do not leave any edge unattended.
Then leave it again for 24 hours. The next day you will find it completely dry and hardened. Now it’s time to scrape off the whole thing. Take a knife or any other tool and scrape off the hardened mixture.
Take a vacuum cleaner and vacuum off the rest of the particles from the carpet. Usually the stinky smell goes off with the hardened mixture pieces. If the smell or tiny bits of mixture still remain, then take a damp cloth and wet the area. Using the vacuum, clean the place again. It will take off all the small and particles away from the carpet.
If however you can still smell the stink after wetting the area with a damp cloth then wait for a bit. Use two parts water for one vinegar and use the solution to apply on the vomit area. Let the carpet dry again as damp carpet usually smells quite bad. Once the carpet dries there won’t be any smell left.
