Make Your Own Wood Stain
By making a homemade vinegar wood stain mixed with tea, you can make any new piece of wood look rustic. This is very easy to do and does not take a lot of time. The end result of this stain is simply beautiful.
All you need is the following ingredients:
- white distilled vinegar
- steel soap pads or steel wool
- tea bags and hot water
- 2 containers with lids
- a paint brush or old rag
- gloves
The type of tea that you use does not truly matter, but it will change the color of the stain. Many people end up using green tea or black tea. You can also mix in used coffee grinds to add a little more brown to the rustic stain.
Staining the wood to make it look rustic
Once you have gotten all of your ingredients together for the rustic wood stain, mix the steel soap pads with the vinegar and allow that to sit for about 24 hours. You should begin to see a color change as it sits over night.
You can let it sit longer to make a much darker color. While you are waiting for this mixture to be complete, you can brew some tea. This can go into the second of your containers with a lid. Put the lid on this mixture and allow it to sit with the tea bags in the container for about 10 minutes.
After your mixtures have sat for their intended amount of time, you can start staining your wood to get a much more rustic look. Paint the wood with the tea mixture first. Let that sit for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then you can paint the wood with your steel pad mixture. Allow that to sit for about an hour as well. Depending on how well you like the color, you can go back over the wood with each mixture until it is the color that you like.
The Final Product
Once you have followed all of these steps, the wood should be a much darker color and it should have a distinctly rustic look. Be proud of your new creation. The wood should now look much more rustic. Your house guests might think that it is extremely antique. You don't have to tell them that it is your little secret!
