First of all, the best thing to do is to wear old clothes before getting started. Therefore, if you do happen to stain them, it's not the end of the world, you can always keep that one piece of clothing as the one you use for these occasions. Also, drape a towel around your shoulders to further prevent stains.
If your clothes do get stained, place the garment on a surface and start to tackle the stain. Next, pour some surgical spirit over the stain and, using a sponge, rub the dye stain gently but firmly to get rid of the stain.
After rubbing the stain, add some more alcohol and rub again. Repeat. Repeat until you see that the stain has disappeared. Remember: this trick will only work if you tackle the stain straight away, when it's still fresh. If you have waited some time since the stain was created, this trick may not be of use.
Transfer stains. Another way to resolve such problems with stains is to place the stained garment over a white cloth, with the stain facing downwards so that it is in contact with the clean fabric. Apply some turpentine to a sponge and dab it onto the stain, by doing this, you'll transfer the stain from one fabric to another. Keep doing this until the stain is completely transferred to the white cloth and then rinse it in cold water.
In a bowl, mix equal parts of powdered bleach (that's designed for all types of fabrics) and water until you create a paste to start your own homemade stain remover. Then, dip a piece of clean cloth into your mixture and use it to dab the stain. We recommend you do this to clothes turned inside out. When the entire stain is fully covered with the paste, leave for fifteen minutes. Then, rinse the garment in cold water. Ensure that you are always wearing gloves to protect your hands from abrasive liquids and ensure that no children are near whilst doing this.
If the above tricks still haven't removed the hair dye stain, we recommend washing the clothing in a washing machine following the instructions on the clothes' label. We recommend using a strong detergent to effectively remove the dye. Make sure you completely remove the stain before putting it the dryer as the heat will only make the stain more ingrained. Moreover, ensure that you put the piece of clothing in on its own, as the dye may then transfer to the other items of clothing.
Finally if the stain has still not come off in the washing machine, we would advise you to go to a dry-cleaners where they will be able to industrially remove your stain. This can be a pain and quite expensive, therefore we always advice to do this only as a last resort.
