How To Remove Paint From Clothing

Removing paint stains from your clothes is not an easy task and it may even seem like you have ruined the item of clothing for good. Although it can be difficult to remove paint from fabrics, if you act fast and use the right techniques it won't have to mean throwing your clothing away.

OneHowTo have put together a little guide for you on the most effective techniques for removing paint stains from your clothes. As with most stains, the quicker you act to deal with the stain the more likely it is you will be able to completely remove it.

Steps to follow:
1

The first thing you should do is read the label on your garment. This is because not every product can be used on your garment, so proceed with caution. Also, you should not wash the clothes before removing the stain, because this will make the stain worse and it will become even more difficult to remove.

2

For cases where the stain is an oil-based paint, you should scrape the paint away from the fabric surface. After passing a sponge over the rest of the paint to absorb as much as possible, dry the area with paper towels.

Repeat as necessary until the stain comes out. You can also apply some liquid detergent to the stain, let it soak in to the fabric and then hand wash the garment in hot water.

3

If the paint stain is water based, you must act swiftly and not let the stain dry in as it will be much more difficult to remove. Rinse the garment immediately with plenty of hot water and detergent to fully remove the paint stain. Once there are no more traces of paint, rinse the garment with warm water and wash it by hand with a mild detergent.

4

Paint stains should be treated as quickly as possible, especially if the paint is oil based because it quickly permeates the clothing fibres, making it permanent.

Remember that if the stain does not come out using these techniques and if the garment is of value, it is best to see a laundry professional. We have plenty of tips on removing all kinds of stains, including ink stains, lipstick stains, oil stains, nail polish and more.
