First of all, you must check if the clothes item in question has mold for having kept in the wardrobe for too long. If this is the case, wash it before putting it in the washing machine, taking off the mold with detergent and a brush.

A good trick to remove musty smell from clothes with vinegar is to also use bicarbonate sodium. You'll only need to mix 1/3 of a cup of bicarbonate sodium in a cup of vinegar and then pour the mixture in the detergent compartment. If you want you can use fabric softener, but if you don't do so, don't worry, your clothes will not smell of vinegar.

Once you have finished washing, take your clothes out of the washing machine and make sure they're not smelling any longer, if they do smell, repeat the process as many times as necessary.

Once the musty smell has been removed, hang your clothes in a sunny space and make sure they dry well. When dry, you can use clothes perfume.

Before storing them back into the wardrobe, get rid of humidity in there, as the wardrobe may be responsible for your clothes' horrible smell. To do so, leave the doors and drawers open for at leas 5 hours with vegetable coal inside.

If the smell comes back in a couple of days, it can be because the clothes have fungus; to get rid of it, leave the clothes in tepid water with vinegar for thirty minutes, with a cup of bicarbonate sodium.
